The Ethics and Advocacy in Humanitarian Action course will explore the ethical questions faced daily by humanitarian aid workers, both in the organization context and on the field. This course will provide humanitarian professionals with a framework for evaluating practical ethical issues that arise. Through theories and various historical and current case studies, participants will examine alternative ethical grounds for action.
Topics of study and discussion include: cases of crisis reporting, the role of photojournalism, psycho-cultural dimensions of suffering, constraints on the news frame, the narrative context, communicating humanitarian goals and participation, crisis and strategic communication, and newsgathering in crisis. The subject matter will be approached through readings, several essays, discussion, and a final in-class presentation of a strategic communication plan for a humanitarian crisis.
